Throughout my childhood, housing insecurity was a constant. As lifelong renters and lower-wage employees, my parents did the best they could but that didn’t stop us from moving a lot – 5 schools in 1st grade alone (same school twice in one school year). As an adult, I did what was expected. I went to work and paid bills on payday. But it never fulfilled me. I was just never satisfied. In my late 40s, I decided it was time to follow my heart. I wanted to help children & families with housing insecurities so that more kids could come HOME to the same place every day, so families could put down roots in the community that I loved, so these parents could start to build wealth through property ownership & equity.

In October 2019, I earned by real estate license and launched into a new career that would put me front and center in the housing industry – where I could advocate for affordable housing, attend Legislative Days as an industry member, be involved in a boots-on-the-ground way in helping to develop single-family and multi-family long term housing. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

I earned my real estate license in late October 2019 – and in March 2020 – PANDEMIC!!! The country went on lockdown!! I was only 5 months into this new career and was still growing a database of potential clients and customers. I was still learning how to do the job… but now I had no one to help.

There were no open houses, no contact, no going out, no dinners, no coffee meetings, nothing. But I put on my big girl boots and took them to social media. I met people through Zoom. I set up several ways to “chat” with me anytime online so the customers could find me easily. I had to be accessible for them where they were – and they were at home!

What else should our readers know about HomeTowne Realty?

Hometowne Realty began as a single office with a handful of agents on Main Street in Clayton NC. In 2001, Barry Woodard and James Lipscomb launched this new enterprise with no expectations except to do the right thing. Every time.

I became a family member of Hometowne Realty (HTR) in Oct. 2019, was put through the required new agent “Bootcamp”, and was enveloped by over 260 agents from all over the triangle region. I had never felt so welcome and so supported before. It was AWESOME and I knew that I was HOME!! HTR has grown in 20 years.

From that single office with a few agents in 2001, HTR is now 7 offices with nearly 300 agents.

My brokerage office, which I co-own with Barry and our partner Andrew Techet, is located at 1213 Ridge Rd., Raleigh.

Our agents embrace the ideology of HTR – that this city is our Hometowne and these clients/customers are our neighbors & family, that we do the right thing every single time for every single person, and that we give back to our community through acts of service, donations of goods, commission deductions for various organizations and many other things that we don’t promote because the importance is NOT in the recognition.
